No, you can browse the map, rate and report without an account. However, creating a free account will gradually increase the weight of your ratings.

When you rate a place on the map, our data engine recalculates a hexagonal grid and displays the average rating per hexagon. If you rate a place where no hexagon exists, you’ll be the first at that location, and a hexagon will appear (your rating won’t necessarily be at the center of the hexagon, as this depends on the spatial distribution of surrounding ratings). If you rate a place where a hexagon is already visible, your rating will be added to the hexagon’s average with a weighting factor based on your MipMaps level.
